Introduction of product:

Cetrimide, or alkyltrimethylammonium bromide, is an antiseptic made of three ammonium compounds: cetrimonium bromide, tetradonium bromide and laurtrimonium bromide. As an antiseptic agent, cetrimide has various antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties, and it can be used to prevent or minimize infections on the skin. In addition, it is a surfactant, which means it functions as a detergent.

How does it work:

Cetrimide is used topically for wound cleaning and to treat some skin disorders. Other uses include treating minor burns as well as preventing infection in cuts, small wounds, and grazes, as well as treating nappy rash. Infections can be prevented with cetrimide. According to the doctor, you should apply Cetrimide over the affected area. It is also used to treat insect bites. Cetrimide is an active ingredient in several creams, solutions, gels, and sprays due to its bactericidal properties. Cetrimide, a quaternary ammonium compound, is used as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceutical formulations. It can also be used as a cationic surfactant. Eye drops contain 0.005% w/v of this preservative. Cetrimide is employed as a topical disinfectant for treating wounds and burns in relatively high concentrations, typically 0.1–1.0% w/v aqueous solutions, creams, or sprays. It is also a disinfectant and cleaner for hard contact lenses, but it should never be used on soft ones.

Manufacturing process:

A suitable alkyl bromide is combined with trimethylamine to form cetrimide. Using the combination of tetradonium bromide, cetrimonium bromide, and laurtrimonium bromide, cetrimide is both an antiseptic and an anti-inflammatory. Cetrimide is added to a culture medium to produce a solid selective medium for use in qualitative techniques for selective isolation and presumptive identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other gram-negative bacteria.

How to use:

  • Cleanse the wounds
  • Treatment of some skin disorders
  • Treatment of minor burns
  • Prevent infection in cuts, small bruises, chapped hands, and nappy rash

Side effects:

Cetrimide may cause skin irritation and an allergic reaction in long-term users. Cetrimide also causes the adverse effects in addition to those already mentioned. Cetrimide usually causes temporary side effects that dissipate upon treatment completion. If they persist, consult your doctor right away.
